“Why Kids Shouldn’t Eat Junk Food”
Before I start, I’d like you all to stand up and look down at your body. What do you see? Well, let me start my speech by saying “You are what you eat!” Scary, isn’t? Now, sit down and I’ll tell you why kids shouldn’t eat junk food.
If you eat a lot of junk food, you run the risk of turning your body into junk. Think of your body as a car and the food you eat as fuel. If you want a car to perform, you have to give it a right fuel. The same is true of your body.
Now, let me define “junk food”. Junk food is food hat does more harm than good to the body. It is full of fats, oil, salt, sugar, additives and colorings.
What happens if you eat a lot of junk food? Well, one problem is obesity. According to the Organization of Economic Co-operation and Development, about twenty per cent of Australian adults are obese. That’s one in five adults! And obese people are more likely to suffer from heart disease or adult diabetes.
Another problem with junk food is its high sugar content. This can cause tooth decay, which may cays you lose teeth when you are in adults. Tooth decay occurs when teeth are frequently exposed to food containing carbohydrates such as starches and sugar like soda pop, candy, cake and even sticky fruits. This may take as long as 6- 8 years or as short as 6 months till outer layer has collapsed and producing a hole that cannot repair itself.
Perhaps you think that a little junk food is OK. But recent research by scientists at the University of Wisconsin suggests that some people may become addicted to the fat, sugar and salt in junk food. Addictive means not being able to stop.
You’re probably wondering if what you eat is junk food. Well, did you know that cakes and biscuits have a lot of sugar? Fizzy drinks contain sugar and some contain caffeine, and addictive substance. Potato chips are also full of salt and fat.
I could go on. Instead, I’ll leave you with some words of wisdom. As Mama Bear form the Berenstain Bears said to her cubs: “… You’re growing from side to side as much as you are up to down! ... You’ve gotten into the habit of eating altogether too many sweets and goodies. We’re going to… get back to healthy, nourishing food!”
And I hope you will, too!
Thank you!
